The clinical trials of the first drug, Alli (Xenical), for the treatment of obesity, were published yesterday.
The study, sponsored by the drug company Roche, is the first clinical trial to compare the effects of a low-calorie diet and Xenical, the first medicine to be approved for obesity, with the first diet pill, Alli.
The trials, published in the journalThe Lancetand in the European journalObstet Gynecol, were conducted to compare the effects of a diet and Xenical on body weight gain in patients with obesity and in the long-term clinical trial population who had a body mass index (BMI) of 30 kg/m2 or more. The patients were recruited from the United Kingdom, Norway, Portugal, and Spain.
Patients who had a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more had greater weight gain compared with those in the diet group and those who had a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more had a greater weight gain than those who had a BMI of less than 30 kg/m2.
Patients who took Alli had no clinically relevant adverse events (AEs). The safety of Alli was not reported in the clinical trials.
Alli was used in clinical trials for the treatment of obesity, and was approved for use in the United Kingdom in 2004 for the treatment of obesity in adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older. It is the first drug approved for the treatment of obesity and is also the first obesity drug approved for the treatment of obesity in children.
In the long-term clinical trials of Alli, which had a BMI of 30 kg/m2 or more, the main adverse events of the study patients were gastrointestinal adverse events and weight gain. Other side effects were gastrointestinal adverse events such as flatulence, constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea.
The researchers of the new study, who were not involved in the clinical trials, said the results of the clinical trials are not yet in their full effect.
“We have not seen the full potential of the clinical trials to demonstrate the full potential of the clinical trials to show the potential to improve our patients’ health outcomes.
